September at Love Thy Neighbor: Fighting Hunger, Supporting Health & Sharing Our Neighbors’ Stories
September is an important month at Love Thy Neighbor Food Pantry in King George, Virginia. As we continue working to provide food and essential items to our neighbors, we’re also finding new ways to support their health, dignity, and well-being.
This month, we’re looking forward to participating in the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank Open House on Saturday, September 12, while also bringing attention to two growing initiatives at our pantry: our Health Shelf and Women & Girls Corner.

Join Us at the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank Open House
Love Thy Neighbor will have a table at the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank’s Open House on Saturday, September 12.
The Open House is a wonderful opportunity for members of our community to learn more about the work being done to address hunger throughout our region. Stop by the Love Thy Neighbor table to meet us, learn more about the needs we’re seeing in King George, and find out how you can get involved.
Whether you’ve supported the pantry for years or are just learning about us, we’d love to see you. Events like this give us an opportunity to connect face-to-face with the people who make our work possible — volunteers, donors, community partners, and neighbors who simply want to help.

Hunger Action Committee: Every Neighbor Has a Story
Love Thy Neighbor is also proud to be part of the Hunger Action Committee (HAC), which will be participating in the Open House.
An important part of the Hunger Action Committee’s work is helping our community understand that hunger isn’t simply a statistic. Food insecurity affects real people and families, each with their own experiences, challenges, and stories.
During the Open House, the Hunger Action Committee will help shine a light on our neighbors’ stories and the realities of hunger in our region. By listening to those experiences, we can better understand the barriers our neighbors face and work together toward meaningful solutions.
When we talk about hunger, we’re talking about our community — our neighbors, families, seniors, children, and friends.
We hope you’ll take some time during the Open House to learn more about the Hunger Action Committee and why telling our neighbors’ stories matters.
Help Us Build Our New Health Shelf
One of our newest initiatives at Love Thy Neighbor is our Health Shelf.
For people living with chronic health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease, finding foods that fit their dietary needs can be especially important. Yet healthier options can sometimes be difficult to afford when a household is already struggling to put enough food on the table.
We have designated space in our pantry for a Health Shelf that will focus on healthier choices, particularly foods that are low in sodium, low in fat, and low in added sugar.
We have the shelf — now we need our community’s help filling it.
At this time, we do not have dedicated funding for the Health Shelf. We’re asking individuals, businesses, churches, civic groups, and other community organizations to consider helping us stock it.
Donations of appropriate shelf-stable foods can help us provide our neighbors with more choices that better align with their health needs. Financial donations designated to support the Health Shelf can also help us purchase the items that are needed most.
Our goal is simple: when a neighbor comes to Love Thy Neighbor for food assistance, we want to offer choices that support not only their immediate need for food, but their overall health whenever possible.
Women & Girls Corner: Providing Essentials With Dignity
Food isn’t the only necessity that can become difficult to afford when money is tight.
Our Women & Girls Corner was created to provide personal care, health, hygiene, and beauty essentials specifically for the women and girls we serve.
Thanks to the generosity of a donor, this important resource has received funding. But these products are used every week, and keeping the Corner stocked consistently requires continued donations from the public.
Items for the Women & Girls Corner include:
Menstrual products
Soap and body wash
Deodorant
Razors and shaving supplies
Shampoo and other personal care products
Feminine hygiene products
Other health, hygiene, and beauty essentials for women and girls
These may seem like ordinary household items, but for someone facing financial hardship, they can represent another difficult choice in an already stretched budget.
Providing these essentials is about more than supplying products. It’s about dignity, confidence, comfort, and making sure women and girls in our community have access to basic necessities.
Even a small donation can help us keep the Women & Girls Corner stocked from week to week.
September Is a Month to Take Action
There are many ways to stand with our neighbors this September.
You can donate healthier shelf-stable foods to help launch our Health Shelf. You can contribute hygiene and personal care products to our Women & Girls Corner. You can support the pantry financially, volunteer, tell others about our work, or simply help spread the word about food insecurity in our community.
And we hope you’ll come see us on Saturday, September 12 at the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank Open House. Visit our table, learn more about Love Thy Neighbor and the Hunger Action Committee, and discover how you can be part of the work happening right here in our community.
Every can on a shelf, every hygiene product donated, every story shared, and every helping hand makes a difference.
Together, we can fight hunger, support healthier lives, preserve dignity, and show our neighbors that our community cares.
